Property owners along Old Town Hall Road in Crosby Township were experiencing difficulty in accessing their hunting shacks and other buildings. The road, originally wet and frost-susceptible, was difficult for drivers to use as it crossed a wet land area. In 2011, Green Aggregate Fill (shredded, recycled tires) was installed as an aggregate substitute in the road’s reconstruction to provide a wetland crossing and add insulating qualities. Now, shredded, recycled tires are working to reduce frost activity and prevent damage to the road bed.
This road design required the installation of geotextile fabric to meet requirements for the use of shredded, recycled tires in a wetland. The geotextile fabric is intended to encapsulate the shredded tires, separating them from soil layers. Not all designs require complete encapsulation or the use of geotextile fabric.
Tree removal was not necessary to complete this project, aiding in the preservation of the road-side forest.
The installation and completed road are seen in the photos below, as provided by the project contractor, Land Logic, Inc.
